Early Writing

Writing is a Craft

Writerloop is a collection of writing experiences written in 300 words or less by Judith Ossello and other guest writers.

We write blog entries throughout the writing process and have consciously tried not to quote other writers or writing experts. We all read craft essays, but we want to write about our own experiences with editing, characters, etc.

We hope you’ll find these personal experiences with writing craft somewhat useful.

The Saturday Section gives us a chance to hear from some photographer friends and do a little travel writing of our own. If you’d like to say hello, please do so at hello{at}writerloop{dot}com.

About Me

My approach to writing has changed over time. Writerloop started when I was preparing for the 2010 Tin House Summer Writer’s Workshop. I didn’t know any writers. I hadn’t published a short story in over 10 years. I had never attended a writer’s workshop.

At the Tin House Workshop, I realized that when other writers discuss their personal experiences with writing craft, I was given an opportunity to readjust my perspective and consider other approaches. I didn’t know what draft I was on or how to give feedback during a workshop, but I learned as quickly as possible by listening to others and figuring out what works for me.

My first short story was published in Ecletica Magazine. The second in Corium Magazine. I’m working on the third one right now. My favorite poem is, Interrogation by Sophie Cabot Black, and I’ve tried to explain why in The Rumpus. I write about local lit events for Electric Literature’s blog, The Outlet.

In terms of formal education, I have a BA in english from Denison University, an MS in e-commerce from DePaul University, and an MBA in entrepreneurship and innovation from Babson College. I currently live in Portland, Oregon.
